DC FANDOME

After learning that San Diego Comic-Con had to cancel their event in 2020, our partners at Warner Bros. seized the opportunity to launch the first ever virtual global fan event: DC FANDOME. In order to give this digital experience a premium and cinematic feel, they turned to the creative team at Buddha Jones. Together, we collaborated on this epic event, bringing the DC Multiverse to life through the Hall of Heroes and various targeted marketing pieces.

The Hall Of Heroes
The epicenter of the DC FanDome is the Hall of Heroes, where you can experience special programming, panels and content reveals from a wide variety of films, TV series and games, available in several languages for a truly global experience. Conceived, designed and built from the ground up by the Buddha Jones team, the Hall of Heroes showcases the grandeur of the DC FanDome Experience.

The Entry - VFX Breakdown
Using Cinema 4D we modeled and built the hallway and gateway transition, carefully creating the architecture scale to feel believable but still at a large scale. Once we developed the aesthetic, we refined the architecture of the hallway to incorporate the vertical screen animations as the viewer walks down the hall and we used substance painter to create custom textures for the environment. Once the lighting and volumetric spot lights were finalized, we had to introduce animated crowds for a sense of scale so we opted to use Adobe Mixamo and it allowed us to integrate crowds efficiently in order to populate the hallway. The hallway was not only designed for 16x9 but was also reformatted for vertical and square in order to be used across marketing outside of the event.

The Stage - VFX Breakdown
This model was rigged with a combination of expresso, mograph and polyfx. Using the amazing fields in C4D R20, we were able to break apart and animate the reconstruction of the stadium. Then, taking a step back from our usual Arnold workflow, we textured, lit and rendered all materials in C4D - providing complete control over the stadium’s exact look, feel and polish. Using Adobe After Effects for color correction and final composition, the exported camera data from C4D allowed us to seamlessly add the DC FanDome Logo, plasma energy effects and a stunning sunset environment.
